The Itinerary

The Témiscamingue, the southern part of the larger Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, follows the lake of the same name — the north arm of the Ottawa River — for nearly 150 km. Route 101 hugging the lake is one of Quebec's most peaceful drives: mixed forests, small villages, and the lake always to one side.

Ville-Marie, the historic capital, hosts the Maison du Frère-Moffet (1881) and the Mont-Sainte-Marie lookout. 10 km away, the Fort-Témiscamingue–Obadjiwan National Historic Site (Parks Canada) tells 250 years of fur trade history and contains the "enchanted forest" of twisted cedars unique to Quebec.

Further south, Témiscaming — an old paper-mill town founded by Riordon Pulp in 1917 — keeps its industrial Anglo-Canadian character. Outfitters like Camp Hicks dot the route — this is one of Quebec's most renowned walleye fishing destinations.
