Past Mont-Tremblant, Route 117 enters the Upper Laurentians: boreal forest, wild lakes, outfitters and forestry villages. It's a less touristy, rougher Quebec where cottages replace hotels.
La Macaza and its historic airport (a former NATO base) lead to Labelle, gateway to the Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve (Sépaq) — a vast 1,600 km² playground for canoe-camping, walleye fishing and moose viewing. The 232 km P'tit Train du Nord linear park parallels Route 117.
