The Itinerary

This short drive from Jonquière toward Shipshaw follows the Chicoutimi River and the Saguenay to reach the region's gigantic hydroelectric dams. Alcan (now Rio Tinto) built several of the largest power stations along the Saguenay.

Shipshaw Dam (1941) is one of North America's most impressive at 960 MW. The Saguenay gorges upstream offer dramatic panoramas. The Shipshaw power station is visible from developed viewpoints.
