The Itinerary

The hinterland of the Bas-Saint-Laurent remains one of Quebec's best-kept secrets. Route 185, the Trans-Canada Highway running to New Brunswick, skirts the great Lake Témiscouata — 45 km long, 220 m deep, one of Quebec's largest inland lakes.

Parc national du Lac-Témiscouata (Sépaq, established 2009) protects the west shore: beach, kayak rentals, camping and archaeological trails revealing 8,000 years of Indigenous Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) presence. Cabano (Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac) hosts Fort Ingall, a reconstructed 1839 British military fort.

Pohénégamook, further south at the Maine border, is known for its sandy lakeshore, resort and the famous "lake monster" legend — a real tourist draw. Témiscouata also features the Petit Témis bike trail: 130 km of former rail corridor to Edmundston (New Brunswick).
