The Itinerary
From Sept-Îles, Route 138 runs more than 375 km east to Natashquan, where it dead-ends. Beyond that, there are no roads: only the sea, plane or snowmobile reach the Lower North Shore.
The route crosses some of Quebec's least-travelled landscapes: Canadian Shield plunging into the Gulf, long deserted beaches, Innu and Acadian villages. Havre-Saint-Pierre is the main stop: gateway to the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve and its famous sea-sculpted limestone monoliths.
Natashquan, birthplace of poet-songwriter Gilles Vigneault, marks the end of the road — a cultural pilgrimage for Quebecers. The old general store, white-sand beach, and red schoolhouse-turned-historic-site all evoke the spirit of Vigneault's songs.
