The Itinerary

Montreal to Gatineau via Highway 50 or the scenic Route 148 hugging the north bank of the Ottawa River — two very different ways to cover the same distance.

Route 148 is by far the more interesting: it passes through Lachute, Papineauville, Montebello (historic Fairmont Château Montebello) and Masson-Angers before reaching Gatineau. Gatineau Park, a 363-km² forest enclave minutes from Ottawa, is one of Canada's best spots for fall colours.

Gatineau, with its federal museums walkable from Ottawa, the ByWard Market and lively restaurants, makes an excellent weekend destination.
